Teenage Discos in Ireland: A Changing Landscape

Teenage disco

Teenage discos have long been a rite of passage in Ireland, but their nature has transformed significantly. Once small, community-run events, they are now large-scale commercial ventures often held in licensed premises. This shift has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of young attendees.

The Risks and Concerns

A report by Alcohol Forum Ireland (AFI) highlights several risks associated with modern teenage discos:

  • Underage Drinking: Despite alcohol sales being prohibited at these events, reports of underage drinking are common. This can lead to health risks and make young people vulnerable to other dangers.

  • Sexual Harassment and Violence: The AFI report and media accounts have documented instances of sexual harassment and assault at teenage discos. The crowded and often loosely supervised environment can create opportunities for such behavior.

  • Lack of Supervision: With large numbers of attendees, ensuring adequate supervision can be challenging. This can lead to fights, injuries, and other safety issues.

Calls for Regulation and Safeguarding

The AFI report calls for several measures to mitigate these risks:

  • Stricter Adherence to Child Protection Laws: Venues hosting teenage discos should be required to comply with national vetting and child protection legislation. This includes Garda vetting for staff and the implementation of child safeguarding statements.

  • Clear Age Restrictions: The report recommends establishing clear age limits for attendees and enforcing them through age verification checks. This could prevent younger children from being exposed to inappropriate behavior or situations.

  • Adult-to-Child Ratios: Establishing mandatory adult-to-child ratios would ensure adequate supervision and help prevent safety issues. The report also suggests requiring a gender balance among staff to further enhance safety.

The Need for Further Research

While the AFI report and media coverage shed light on the problems associated with teenage discos, more research is needed to fully understand the issue. In-depth studies could explore the experiences and perspectives of young people, parents, venue operators, and other stakeholders. This research could inform the development of more effective policies and practices to ensure the safety and well-being of teenagers attending these events.
